WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AS POWAY UNIFIED BOARD MEMBER

  • Achieved board support for hiring outside interim superintendent and started nationwide search for new superintendent.
  • Conducted audit of Superintendent Collins’ contract and compensation.
  • Achieved unanimous board support for hiring special counsel to represent the Board of Education.
  • Oversaw transition to Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)
  • Created two new board controlled advisory committees – Budget Review Advisory Committee (BRAC) and Education Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC)
  • Forged board consensus to contract with California School Boards Association (CSBA) to overhaul outdated Board Policies and Procedures.
  • Implemented competitive process (RFQ) for hiring bond financial advisor and bond underwriter that had both previously enjoyed no-bid contracts for two decades.
  • Achieved board consensus to create competitive process (RFQ) for district legal counsel.
  • Began competitive process for selecting CFD Mello Roos Administrator, after 18+ years with one firm and its’ predecessor.
  • Created new, open and public procedure for choosing Board’s appointee to the Personnel Commission.
  • Brought down class sizes Kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Restored staff positions districtwide.
  • Reduced employee out-of-pocket health insurance costs.
  • Provided staff raises.
  • Increased funding for PE and visual and performing arts (VAPA)
  • Increased funding for robotics programs.
  • Supported and approved expansion of Stone Ranch Elementary to relieve overcrowding.
  • Worked with Student Support Services to provide additional resources for Youth in Transition and other supports for families in crisis.
  • Increased counselors at elementary schools.
  • Increased funding for libraries.

    • Hire new superintendent with the highest levels of integrity and competence
    • Ensure effective implementation of recommendations from ETAC, BRAC , our board advisory committees
    • Hire qualified Deputy Business Administrator
  • Education Equality and Excellence
    • Reduce class sizes to optimal levels
    • Increase funding for co-curricular and extra-curricular programs
    • Increase social emotional learning programs K-12
    • Increase career pathway educational programs
    • Increase online courses for high school
    • Increase library services and hours
    • Work to close the achievement gap
    • Ensure access to drinking water at every school
    • Pursue farm to table school meal partnerships
    • Reintroduce intramural sports in middle schools
    • Support anti-bullying programs
    • Advocate for middle and high school start times no earlier than 8AM
    • Create more humane policy for participation in high school graduation ceremony
    • Look at enrollment policy changes at Design 39 Campus
